Ahh, bliss. After an aborted attempt on the one day a week they are closed, I finally got to the main purpose of visiting Japan - TONKATSU EUPHORIA!
I know some where concerned that somehow this timeless place has changed, but I can put those worries to rest. The same vibe from the 1980's when I first visited is here now. I think I even recognized a remaining crew member from my days, though the leader from those old days is long gone.
The menu is identical to my memory - the server tried to offer me one but I just told him my standard order - ROSU to Beer, ROSU being the fattier, tastier pork roast. The katsu comes with their version of miso soup - pork-based broth with bits of meat and tofu in it - a bottom-less bowl of good rice, also infinite quantities of shredded cabbage (particularly good soaked in their Tonkatusu Sauce), and tsukemono, pickled cucumber and daikon today.
But of course the star is the TONKATSU itself. The meat is moist and taste wrapped by a crispy crust of double-dipped coating. The process involves cooking it twice with two dips in the coating mixture - fresh for every order (which takes them about 15 minutes to prepare - well worth the wait).
The counter was full, which shows how they have survived. Most were regulars who you could see joking with the servers and cooks. Everyone satisfied...
